The Nature of Light :: The Paine Art Center 2025

In 2022 my family was swept away by the beauty and whimsy of the Nature of Light exhibit at The Paine Art Center. Even though it was only there a few short months, I took my family twice and helped arrange a field trip for my students once. 

As soon as I saw the exhibit would be returning to Oshkosh, WI, I knew I would be making yet another visit! Every time I go I see something new, but the sense of wonder and awe remains the same. 

If you've gone in the past and are wondering if it is worth it to get tickets this year, my response is a resounding YES! They've added even more magic and charm - it is truly a delight for all your senses. 

This hands-on, interactive, immersive experience was created by artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk in collaboration with an experimental lighting and design practice called Lightswitch. The HYBYCOZO sculptures emit dream-like lighting shining through the negative space of each sculpture; personally I might argue this luminary spectacle is equally as impressive as the artwork itself. [In case you're like me and didn't already know, HYBYCOZO stands for 'Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone': a nod to the artists' favorite book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.]
